What to Do in the Meantime
Depending on the type of dental emergency you are experiencing, there are certain steps you can take until you are able to see a doctor:
- Knocked Out Tooth
- In case of a loose or knocked-out tooth, it is important to keep the area moist. If you can place the tooth back in the socket, do so. However, if you cannot, hold the tooth by the crown in a glass of milk or saltwater. We will do our best to save the tooth. If it cannot be saved, we offer solutions such as dental implants.
- Cracked or Broken Tooth
- If your tooth has broken, keep the broken portion moisturized and safe until you arrive at our office. It is essential to avoid biting down in order to prevent further fracturing. We can often restore damaged teeth with solutions such as a dental crown.
- Severe Pain
- Unbearable oral pain is often the result of a serious dental infection or injury which will require root canal therapy. You can manage the pain by using over-the-counter medication, utilizing ice packs to reduce swelling, and eating only soft foods to prevent unnecessary pressure on the area.
Preventing Dental Emergencies
There are several precautions you can take to help prevent dental emergencies, including:
- Wearing a mouth guard when playing sports
- Avoiding chewing on particularly hard objects, foods, or ice
- Seek treatment for bruxism or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder to help prevent broken teeth
- Do not use your teeth to cut or open packages
By making a conscious effort to protect your smile, you can prevent chips, cracks, and fractures. It is also important that you undergo recommended dental procedures and attend regular exams to preserve your oral health.
