Knowing the Importance of Treatment
Root canals reach the bottom of a tooth and are hallow chambers within. A patient who has a deep cavity with an infected pulp of a tooth will often need a root canal to remove any infected tissue and treat painful symptoms.
While some patients may not experience any noticeable symptoms, common warning signs may include:
- A severe toothache
- Discoloration of the tooth
- Gum swelling and tenderness
- Sensitivity to hot and cold
When the infection is not treated, the patient may need a dental bridge or may lose the tooth and require a dental implant to replace the structure.
How Does Infection Develop?
A root canal infection occurs when decay reaches the inner portion of the tooth. This is known as the dental pulp. Infection can permeate the inner tooth chamber if the tooth has suffered a crack or advanced decay has been left untreated.
Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?
Often, patients compare the discomfort they experience during a root canal with that of a regular dental filling. We make every effort to minimize your discomfort by using advanced tools, including a rotary handpiece and an intraoral camera. A rotary handpiece is a special tool designed for more precise, gentler, and faster root canal treatment.
Additionally, a local anesthetic is applied before treatment to completely numb the area. We also offer nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation which can be especially beneficial if you suffer from dental anxiety.
What to Expect during Treatment
To begin, Dr. Khan will create a small opening at the top of the tooth, allowing her to access its inner portion. She will remove the infected tissue and disinfect the interior and root canal chambers. A rubber-like substance is then used to fill the inner portion of the tooth and a filling is placed. In most cases, a dental crown is required to provide protection and strength to the weakened tooth.
We make every effort to minimize your discomfort by using advanced tools, including a rotary handpiece and an intraoral camera.
Qualifying patients can receive a same-day crown created in our office. Otherwise, you will return to our office during a second appointment to have your permanent restoration placed. We offer a range of the finest tooth-colored materials to provide you with natural-looking, long-lasting results.
Cost of Treatment
A variety of factors will determine the cost of your root canal treatment. After your initial consultation, Dr Khan will explain your options and total restoration cost.
